Your workout is so dependent upon what fuel you put in your body before hitting the gym or the track as well as what you consume after a session. We all know the basics about carbohydrates and proteins being an important part of our workout diet but incorporating Superfoods in to your diet will give you the edge that you’ve been looking for. In this article we look at what certain Superfoods can do for you when it comes to optimising and improving your workout success.
Organic Spirulina Powder
Spirulina is high in iron, vitamin B12 and protein and contains about 80% of your daily iron requirements, 150% of your daily vitamin B12 requirements and 4 grams of protein. All in one teaspoon. I typically take Spirulina in the winter as I find it is great for protecting the immune system against cold and flu and is a great source of vitamins and nutrients.
I have recently found that Spirulina helps you during workout as well as vitamin B12 is required for blood flow, metabolism and energy production. It also contains chlorophyll which helps to reduce inflammation and therefore assists in muscle recovery and protection of the muscles. The high levels of protein are also great for assisting in muscle growth.
Organic Maca Powder
Maca is a great source of protein which helps build muscle during your workout. It also reduces inflammation in the muscles and therefore allows you to recover quicker. Although Maca is highly energising it does not act the same way as caffeine because it is not a stimulant but adjust to your body’s requirements. I have been using Maca for the last year and have found that I feel more energised prior to working out and that energy is released gradually throughout my workout, not dumped like it is if you consume an energy drink.
Organic Acai Powder
Acai is a great source of antioxidants as we all know. It is great for reducing inflammation of the muscles, improving blood flow and is very high in Omega 3. Acai is a fantastic addition to your diet and I have found considerably higher levels of energy and a great overall feeling of well-being by consuming it.
Organic Cacao Powder
Chocolate? For working out? Definitely. Cacao should not be confused with cocoa which is the processed version of Cacao and not as healthy. Cacao is one of the best foods to consume prior to working out and reduces inflammation and stress. Because Cacao is a stimulant it provides great energy for your workout and releases that energy gradually, similar to Maca, therefore avoiding an energy crash which is experienced with energy drinks. Cacao also makes you feel great as it is high in phenylethylamine, anandamide, serotonin and dopamine which are all linked to improving your mood and making you feel happy. Feeling happy and making your workout great. A great combination.
Organic Camu Camu Powder
Camu Camu is a relatively new Superfood in Western diets but has been used for thousands of years but the indigenous people of Central and South America. The key to Camu Camu’s effectiveness as a workout supplement is it’s high levels of vitamin C (the highest plant source of vitamin C on the planet), Vitamin C reduces inflammation and is great at protecting the immune system. It is low in sugar and is great at boosting energy levels. This is currently my favourite Superfood and leaves me feeling fantastic.
You can combine all these superfoods in to your daily diet pretty easily. I take a teaspoon or two of each everyday either as is or sometimes in a drink. You can sprinkle over the top of your cereal, mix in to yoghurt or even put in your tea or coffee. However, you consume them all these Superfoods are perfect for giving you the edge in your workout.
