Protect Yourself This Winter From Cold and Flu By Boosting Your Immune System

Winter is upon us here in the Southern hemisphere which means the chance of contracting colds and flu is significantly greater. There are of course the yearly flu jabs you can receive through your local GP here in Australia but it’s also important to ensure a healthy diet full of greens and nutrients.

Increasing vitamin C intake and the amount of vitamins and nutrients in your diet during the winter months can go to assisting in protecting your body against contracting a winter cold or bout of flu. Two products which are great for this are Camu Camu and Spirulina. We take a look at how they can give you added immunity and the additional multiple health benefits they offer.

Camu Camu

Camu Camu is the highest content vitamin C fruit on the planet, containing 60 times the vitamin C of oranges. Vitamin C is the main water-soluble antioxidant and acts as a first defence against free radicals in whole blood and plasmas. It also helps to regenerate vitamin E in lipoproteins and membranes.

Vitamin C is a critical building block for collagen. Collagen is more than just an important building block for great skin it is a factor in preventing diseases such as scurvy and repairing free radical damage to tissues and muscles.

Scurvy is a disease which causes tendons to weaken and joints to become damaged as cartilage deteriorates. It also causes the loss of teeth as the gums lose the ability to hold the teeth in place. Scurvy can also affect the major organs and blood vessels in the same way as the connective tissue around them becomes weaker and damaged which can lead to organ failure and rupturing of blood vessels which can lead to haemorrhaging under the skin. (Carpentier, 2016)

Without vitamin C the body literally falls apart as the body cannot reproduce collagen. Other symptoms of vitamin C deficiency may also include:

-              nosebleeds

-              anaemia

-              swollen and painful joints

-              slow healing of wounds (collagen isn’t rebuilt)

-              shortness of breath

-              impaired digestion

-              increased clots in the blood

Once collagen is created, it is under constant attack from being used.  For example, the friction in your joints can wear down the structure of collagen.  Toxins and free radicals in the body can also attack the collagen structure.

The most popular function of Vitamin C is as an anti-oxidant, and it’s one of the best for protecting collagen from damage.

Spirulina

Spirulina is the most nutrient dense food on the planet and is very high in protein which is critical for repairing and creating muscles and bones. Proteins are made up of amino acids which are responsible for managing insulin levels in the body, maintaining the immune system and distributing vitamins and minerals throughout the body through the blood stream.

Of the 22 amino acids found in proteins, eight of them are essential to healthy body functions, yet the human body cannot produce them. Therefore, these eight amino acids can only be obtained through one's diet.

Spirulina is considered a "complete protein," as it is a quality source of all eight essential amino acids. Plus, the protein in spirulina is between 85 and 95% digestible, making it one of the most powerful and potent forms of protein available. And since the cellular walls found in Spirulina contain no cellulose, its amino acids are absorbed by the body nearly instantly.

Spirulina is rich in chlorophyll, and this makes it an incredibly effective blood cleansing agent. In fact, this microalgae contains more than ten times the amount of chlorophyll per volume than what's found in traditional garden-variety vegetables. The chlorophyll in Spirulina helps build red blood cells in the body, while also offering the body a more easily absorbable form of magnesium. This combination of chlorophyll and magnesium helps to remove toxins from the bloodstream while oxygenating the blood.

The blue colouring in spirulina is actually formed by phycocyanin and allophycocyanin, as well as other anthocyanins. These phytonutrients have been shown to help increase the number of white blood cells in the body. In addition, the polysaccharides found in Spirulina have also been shown to increase immunity, provide anti-viral activity, help in the removal of radiation and heavy metals from the body, and improve the functional productivity of bone marrow, the thymus, and spleen cells.

The phyto-nutrients in Spirulina contains significant amounts of antioxidants, have an anti-inflammatory effect and promote liver health through cleansing of the liver itself.

Phyto-nutrients work as a shield to protect cells from free radical damage which can damage DNA, proteins and cellular function. They work the same way in the human body as they do in plants and are critical to maintaining healthy cells throughout the body, preventing cellular degeneration and disease.

As we always say, work towards a balanced diet and focus on healthy eating as a lifestyle. What Superfoods offer you is a high concentration of vitamins and nutrients which can be consumed easily in a smoothie, sprinkled on cereal or mixed in to yoghurt. Camu Camu and Spirulina are two of the highest content vitamin and nutrient dense products on the planet and are Australian Certified Organic.
